Police have identified two men accused in the August 4 assault that left at least 32 policemen dead or injured in the city of Kashgar, in China’s far west.

The official Web site People.com.cn said the suspects, ages 28 and 33, are Kashgar natives. One drives a taxi and the other sells vegetables.

They are accused of driving a truck into a group of 70 police officers during an early-morning outdoors exercise routine, attacking police with grenades before being arrested at the scene.

It was the second incident this summer involving suspected terrorists in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Last month, police shot and killed five suspected terrorists in the provincial capital Urumqi.

The English service of the official Xinhua news agency reported Kashgar police found 10 homemade explosives, a homemade gun, four knives and posters advocating “holy war” at the site of the latest attack. Similar items were found at what authorities said was a training base for the East Turkestan Islamic Movement in January 2007.

Xinjiang authorities said 12 of the injured officers were expected to recover, while four remained in a hospital intensive care unit. Meanwhile, police have strengthened security checks in public places across Xinjiang.
