The death toll of the August 30 earthquake that hit Panzihua City in Sichuan Province has climbed to 36. Another 675 people were injured in the magnitude-six quake, and 181,000 were forced to leave their homes, reported China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA).

The earthquake came three months after a massive shock in May that killed more than 70,000 people in the same region. The local seismological bureau said more than 443 aftershocks were recorded on August 31 and September 1.

In Panzhihua, a hilly city heavy on steel industry, some residents live in tents in case another major quake occurs. Buildings in the city have no obvious cracks on their walls. The epicenter is a Yi minority village dozen of miles away from the city area.

MCA held a press conference September 1 and said the earthquake has affected lives of 940,000 people in Southwest China and destroyed 390,000 houses.
