Taiwan Bans Mainland Dairy Products

The Taiwan Department of Health has banned import of all dairy and plant protein products from China's mainland.

Taiwan has banned the importation of all dairy products made on the Chinese mainland, as concerns mount over the scope of the contamination that has scandalized China's milk industry.
The Taiwan Department of Health said September 21 that milk powder and diary products, as well as plant protein products such as corn protein, soy protein and non-dairy creamer, may no longer be imported from China's mainland. The statement was a response to the recent discovery of the chemical melamine in numerous Chinese milk products. Related Chinese products that have passed testing and inspection can still be sold.
On September 21, King Car Group, one of Taiwan's major food and beverage producers, announced that eight of the company's food products containing plant protein integrants have tested positive for melamine.
Beginning last April, King Car has been using imported milk extract – a plant protein product – from China's Shandong Duqing Company. All the tainted products were produced after April, said a company representative.
King Car has put a recall on all its contaminated foodstuffs. It is estimated that a total of 12,000 boxes of such products have entered Taiwan markets.
The Taiwan Department of Health has urges all food producers using relevant integrants to send samples for testing. Since Taiwan is the first place to find plant protein products contaminated by melamine, the department will also file a report on the incident to the World Health Organization.
Products from 22 Chinese companies have tested positive for dangerous levels of melamine, a chemical that causes kidney problems in humans. Four infants have died and more than 12,000 others have fallen ill after drinking baby formula tainted with the chemical.
