Head of State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and
Quarantine (AQSIQ), Li Changjiang, has resigned in connection to the tainted
milk scandal that has become the newest black mark on China's ignominious food
safety record.
Li, 64, is a minister level official and the highest
to accept responsibility for the contaminated milk. He is succeeded by Wang
Yong, the deputy secretary general of the State Council.
Caijing
learned that AQSIQ had an internal meeting September 22 in which Li offered his
resignation.
So far 14471 infants have been hospitalized and four
have died from drinking milk-based baby formula that contained melamine, a
chemical that causes kidney stones in humans.
The public has
questioned why AQSIQ failed to discover the seemingly ubiquitous, tainted milk
products earlier. The "inspection-free" status that AQSIQ had granted to certain
companies including several dairy producers is also under tight scrutiny.
Although producers Sanlu, Yili, and Mengniu all hold this inspection free
status, their products were all found to contain melamine during tests this
month. Exempted statuses were suspended last week.
