The European Commission announced further restrictions on Chinese food products containing powdered milk amid growing foreign concerns about the scope of contamination in China’s milk scandal.

The commission said September 25 that it will test 100 percent of products from China in which milk powder comprises more than 15 percent of the ingredients. So far, no food products tainted by melamine have been found in the European Union (EU). The EU currently has a ban on imports of Chinese milk and dairy products.

"We have to react in a thoroughly prudent way, without overreacting," said European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson.

The EU has banned imports of Chinese milk and dairy products since 2002, saying the Chinese standards for such products do not meet EU. However, Chinese food products containing milk have been allowed to enter the EU market. In 2007, the EU has imported around 19,500 tons of cakes and cookies as well as 1,250 tons of chocolate products from China.

Some EU countries have already taken action against Chinese milk products. Italy has imposed extra checks on Chinese food imports, requiring certificates to show they are free from milk. France has banned all food items containing Chinese milk products and has been recalling milk powder from China on its market.
