» The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's mandate to install all new PCs in China with Green Dam-Youth Escort filtering software has caused quite a stir.
» On June 11, two Chinese scholars recommended that the State Council repeal the ministry's decision, deeming it an abuse of power by the government, especially since it allows one software company to monopolize the filtering market.
» That same day, a Chinese lawyer submitted applications to the ministry, requesting both a disclosure on relevant information about the software and a public hearing on the legitimacy and rationality of the ministry's mandate.
» The government says installation of the filtering software is meant to protect young people from harmful content, such as pornography or violent images.
