» Climate change has become a significant contributor to as many as 40 million people suffering from poverty in less developed areas in China, according to a June 17 report by Greenpeace and Oxfam.
» The report indicates that many poverty-stricken regions in China coincide with ecologically fragile areas that have more incidences of droughts, floods, soil erosion, deforestation, and extreme weather. People in those areas are thus more vulnerable to effects brought on by climate change, which exacerbates these already existing problems.
» Experts have suggested that China adopt a development strategy adapted to climate change, taking into account the connection between poverty alleviation and climate change and incorporating precautionary measures against natural disasters.
