China June Power Output Rose 3.8% Year-on-Year; PICC Life Doubles Capital; Influenza May Be Traced to Home Service Worker

China June Power Output Rose 3.8% Year-on-Year
» China's power output in June rose 3.8 percent year-on-year, marking the first rise in 2009, according to data from the State Grid Distribution Center.
» The growth was mainly due to increased power use driven by unusually high early summer temperatures, an analyst with the State Grid told Caijing.
» The analyst also said that the increased output and usage appears to be driven by a sustained economic recovery.

Fiat-Guangzhou Auto JV Car Plant to Start Construction
» Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. said construction of a car plant under a new joint venture with Fiat SpA will begin in August, the official Shanghai Securities Journal reported.
» The proposed facility is expected to produce 140,000 low-emission vehicles and 220,000 engines each year.
» The joint venture, which will take in investment totaling 4.3 billion yuan, still requires approval from the National Development and Reform Commission.

China Will 'Definitely' Mandate Web Filter Sales - Ministry
» China will press ahead with plans to include web-filtering software Green Dam-Youth Escort with all new PCs sold in the country, despite a last-minute postponement of the directive, according to an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
» "What will happen is that some PC manufacturers will have it included with their PC packages sooner than the others," the official said. "But there is no definite deadline at the moment."

PICC Life Doubles Capital
» PICC Life Insurance Co. said its capital has been raised to 5.4 billion yuan from 2.7 billion following a cash injection from its parent company and other shareholders.
» The insurer said its parent, the People's Insurance Company of China, injected 2.2 billion yuan into the life unit, with Sumitomo Life Insurance Co. of Japan contributing 271 million yuan.
» Asia Financial Holdings Ltd. and Bangkok Bank contributed 135 million yuan each.

China Hires Macquarie, JP Morgan to Arrange Listing of Rail Assets
» The Chinese government has hired Macquarie Securities and JP Morgan to help restructure some of the country's premier railway assets with a view to listing the holding company in an initial public offering that could be worth as much as US$ 5 billion, the Financial Times reported.
» The IPO is expected to be launched in Shanghai and Hong Kong in 2010, the newspaper reported on July 2. 
» "The government owns some railway assets and these are being restructured into a new holding company," a person close to the deal told the newspaper.

Influenza May Be Traced to Home Service Worker
» Medical personnel from China's Centers for Disease Prevention and Control found that the outbreak of influenza A/H1N1 at a primary school in Beijing's Chaoyang District may be attributed to a domestic service worker who has tested positive for the disease.
» On July 1 and 2, the school reported 17 confirmed cases of influenza A/H1N1. The 17 pupils, who were sent for treatment to two different hospitals, raised the number of people in Beijing with the flu to 171.
» Chinese health and education authorities have adopted strict measures pertaining to this outbreak, closing the school and quarantining more than 150 people who had close contact with the infected students in a hotel.

China Launches Building Quality Inspection
» The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development called for a comprehensive quality inspection of residential buildings under construction across the country, mainly focusing on a building's foundation and framework.
» The impetus for this nationwide building quality inspection came after a nearly finished 13-story apartment building fell over early on June 27 at Shanghai's "Lotus Riverside" apartment complex.
» The ministry is requiring inspection agents to submit their building evaluations no later than July 30; the validity of these evaluations will be further checked between July and September.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Visits China
» Just weeks after his government's defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) after thirty years of civil war, Sri Lanka's minister of foreign affairs, Rohitha Bogollagama, visited Beijing on July 2.
» He delivered a talk on post-conflict Sri Lanka at the China Institute of International Studies, and there, discussed his hopes for China's role in the future of his country.
» Bogollagama said this victory was aided by the material support Sri Lanka received from China, including the sale of weapons and Chinese investment in infrastructure development projects.
» To promote development, the Sri Lankan government has established special incentives for foreign investors.  On Wednesday, the government also announced the creation of a special 150 acre economic zone open only to Chinese investment.
