Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Visits China

» Just weeks after his government's defeat of
the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) after thirty years of civil war, Sri
Lanka's minister of foreign affairs, Rohitha Bogollagama, visited Beijing on
July 2.
» He delivered a talk on post-conflict Sri Lanka at the China
Institute of International Studies, and there, discussed his hopes for China's
role in the future of his country.
» Bogollagama said this victory was aided
by the material support Sri Lanka received from China, including the sale of
weapons and Chinese investment in infrastructure development projects.
» To
promote development, the Sri Lankan government has established special
incentives for foreign investors. On Wednesday, the government also
announced the creation of a special 150 acre economic zone open only to Chinese
investment.
