» A court in Inner Mongolia handed down the death penalty, with a two-year reprieve, to Xu Guoyuan, the 53-year-old former mayor of the autonomous region's Chifeng city. Xu was convicted of taking over 12.5 million yuan in bribes and owning property of unknown origin worth 14 million yuan.
» The court hearings confirmed that a majority of the money came from real estate developers and that Xu traded bribes for favors.
» Li Minjie, Xu's wife, received three years' imprisonment, with a five-year reprieve, for participating in the bribery and concealing her husband's illegal gains.
» Xu was removed from office in March 2008 and kicked out of the party in January 2009, when he was formally arrested.
