Ex-Taiwan Leader Indicted on More Graft Charge

» Taiwanese prosecutors on Sept. 22 indicted
former leader Chen Shui-bian on an additional charge of embezzling funds
intended for 11 overseas visits during his tenure.
» Investigations found
that the money, totaling US$ 330,000, had been transferred to Chen's son who
lived abroad.
» Also indicted were Chen's chief of "National Security
Council" Chiou I-jen, suspected of embezzling US$ 500,000 from a secret
diplomatic fund with the assistance of former "foreign minister" Kau
Ying-mao.
» A court sentenced Chen to life imprisonment on Sept. 11,
convicting him of embezzling state funds, forgery, taking bribes and money
laundering.
