First Anti-Trust Trial of Internet Company Ends with Dismissal

» The first anti-trust trial regarding online
businesses ended on Oct. 23 in Shanghai, with the case dismissed. Shanda
Interactive Entertainment Limited (SNDA) was accused of abusing its dominancy in
the market.
» Beijing Shusheng Electronics Co. Ltd. brought a suit against
SNDA, claiming the latter abused its dominancy by forcing a novelist to stop
serializing his novel on a Web site owned by Shusheng.
» The focus was on
whether SNDA had abused its dominancy on the market, which the plaintiff failed
to prove, according to the court.
» Since the introduction of a new
anti-trust regime in China in 2008, cases have been filed against companies
including China Mobile, China Netcom and Baidu.
