China Cautious Over Qinghai Flammable Ice Extraction

» China has not drawn plans for a trial program to extract flammable ice, a type of gas hydrate, as an energy source within 15 years, said the China Geological Survey on Oct. 28.
» On Sept. 25, the China Geological Survey under the Ministry of Land and Resources announced that flammable ice has been discovered by drilling in Qilianshan Mountain area, Qinghai Province in northwest China.
» According to preliminary evaluations by scientists, the resource reserves for long-term exploitation in China are at least equal to 35 billion tons of petroleum.
» Combustible ice is regarded as a potential source of alternative energy to coal and oil. One cubic meter of combustible ice can release 164 cubic meters of natural gas.
