It is hard to fulfill China's commitment that in 2020, non-fossil fuels increase to 15 percent of the primary energy consumption, Lu Qizhou, Member of the national committee of CPPCC, President of China Power Investment Corporation (China Power) told Caijing reporter on Mar.7.

China has made a commitment to the world in late 2009 that China will reduce carbon emissions per GDP by 40 to 45 percent in 2020 compared to that of 2005, and increase non-fossil fuels to 15 percent of the primary energy consumption.

China still has a long way to go to achieve the goal, said Lu, in 2009, China consumed 3.1 billion tons of standard coal. Among them, non-fossil fuels such as hydropower, nuclear power and wind power constitute 7 percent with 0.23 billion tons of standard coal.

China's energy consumption is still on the rise. Lu estimated that China's energy consumption will amount to 4.5 billion tons of standard coal in 2020, which means, non-fossil fuels consumption has to climb to 675 million tons of standard coal, about three times the current amount, to reach the set goal.
