There is nothing unusual about the latest spate of earthquakes in Haiti, Chile or Japan, said seismologists from the United Kingdom when interviewed by Xinhua News Agency.
There are dozens of earthquakes a year that have a magnitude above 7 and one earthquake above 8. Therefore, the Chile earthquake is not unusual. Heavy damage is made because of the dense population and poorly constructed buildings, said Professor Keith Priestley from Cambridge University.
Mike Searle from Oxford University holds the similar opinion that the world's current seismic activity is sill at the average level. He added that in places around the Himalaya Mountains, Sumatra Island and other plate boundaries, quakes tend to happen recently.
Both seismologists said the earthquakes are unpredictable in nature, but
based on data presented, we can figure out areas that may by struck by
quakes.
