After Google's recent trouble in China, Google representatives and Chinese authorities met twice, but made no progress as both sides stood their ground. Employees of Google China were not included in the meetings; this arrangement prevents coherence and understanding during talks, and Google's "American Cowboy" image destroyed what little chance for reconciliation that was present.

China's annual Internet Content Provider (ICP) permit renewal deadline is set at the end of March, if Google remains adamant in their initial "no compromise" position, their ICP permit will expire.

The fierce struggle could pass peacefully with Google China's compliance with China's demands, but many who are familiar with Google directors Brin and Schmidt believe that from the beginning that Brin will not allow things to conclude inconclusively. Before March 31st, Google still has time to decide its final move.
