Muammar Gaddafi, the official ruler of
the Libyan Arab Republic from 1969 to 1977 and then the "Brother Leader" of the
Libyan Arab Jamahiriya from 1977 to 2011, was killed on October 20 amid protests
against Gadafi’s rule following resolutions in neighbouring Egypt and Tunisia.
Gaddafi's body was subsequently flown to Misrata and was placed in the freezer
of a local market alongside the bodies of Defense Minister Abu-Bakr Yunis Jabr
and his son and national security adviser Mutassim Gaddafi. The bodies were put
on public display for four days, with Libyans from all over the country coming
to view them.
