Unidentified attackers fired on a Chinese cargo boat on the Mekong River’s Golden Triangle region, Chinese police said.

The boat under the name of Shengtai 11 was attacked by firearms from the Laotian side at about 19:00 on Saturday as it was returning from Chiang Saen Port in Thailand to Guanlei Port in Xishuangbanna of southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

Fortunately, none of the crew was wounded, China’s Ministry of Public Security said in a statement on its website Sunday.

The attack came only two months after Beijing began joint patrols to protect shipping following a deadly attack killed 13 Chinese sailors in October last year.

The boat, which had five crew members, was carrying wood, according to Chinese state television.

After the attack occurred, joint efforts were made from two parties by sending patrol ships and police for rescue, and Laos was still pursing those suspected of carrying out the shooting.
